Wal-Mart and eBooks/audio books
« on: August 23, 2018, 11:00:55 AM »
Walmart eBooks Service
Saw that WalMart had entered the ebook business yesterday when searching out an eBook via an internet search.

Hmmmm...interesting.

The audible/ebook I was looking for was $10.00 less expensive on Amazon.
$10.00 off first purchase via Wal-Mart made them the same.
WMart is going to have to be more competitive on their pricing though.
Not seeing prices I would want to spend.

I am old fashioned. I want a physical book to read. Never did care for reading a book on a computer much. If what I'm reading is a report of some kind, I'll go to campus and print it out there (only nice perk about being an adjunct instructor...free use of copy machine...pay sucks).

I used to be like you and only wanted the print book.
I hear ya though.
I miss the smell of a new book.
I used to have books in my car, in every room of the house and in my purse.

I bought my first eBook reader and was hooked. (it was a Kobo just like the article mentions WMart is using)

Years ago escalated to a Kindle Fire 7.
But didn't like that the fire wasn't backlit.
I've had my Kindle Paperwhite for three (or is it four?) years.

One of the reasons I immediately liked it was I don't have to have my readers on to read.
Font size?
Check.
Background not white?
Sepia, please.
Font?
Yep, I can choose my font, too.
Notes?
Yep.
Online dictionary?
Yep.
The ability to read others notes on the book while on my Kindle?
Yep.
Can I use my local library to download books?
Yep.
Do I have alot of ebooks I've purchased online outside of Amazon on my Kindle?
At least 500+ books I email to my Kindle and write convert in the subject.

Now, they are all on my Kindle in one place. (1800 and counting)
I have books that were published last week.

I have a crazy amount of classics because they are free on the public domain.
There are so many classics that should in my opinion be read over and over.
My stacks and stacks of books are pared down to one bookcase (to house my favorites) and one case that houses my cookbooks. (those are going to my son the chef...eventually)

I still buy 'touchable' books, but much more sparingly.
I just purchased two coffee table books that I wouldn't have purchased for my Kindle and yes, I am 'reading' those and the photo's in those books are well worth the price.

My motherinlaw (RIP) had macular degeneration and we could work the Kindle book to where in her late stages before going blind, she could read them.
My father (RIP) with a really large font could read his civil war history books.
Both had accepted the fact they would never be able to read again, even large print books didn't work.
But the e-reader gave them pleasure.

The odyssey you describe is cool in your transformation to reading on tablets. I think it was really cool what you could do for your father and mother-in-law and help them enjoy to read again with their eyesight issues. I didn't realize that e-readers could do all that for people.

You're Welcome!
Being able to give the gift of reading again to both of them made my heart happy.
I also found that I could get my father's kindle to read the book without having to buy the audible...but he didn't like the way the Kindle Fire 7 worked as vs a Paper White.
Plus, one time he hit Amazon Video by accident and with his sight being what it was, he tapped a movie!
<smile>
It started playing...and my phone was ringing!
How? What? Why is this playing?
Swapped immediately over to a Paper White for him.

If you ever get ready to buy one, lemme know...I can share my ebooks..lots of eBooks.
Husband is reading the 20th out of 22 Jack Reacher books that I have!
We're eclectic readers and have so many varied authors.
Tom Clancy, Stephen King, Gillian Flynn and more.
Sharing is caring!

Shhhhh...I don't toot my own horn often but...speaking of books!
I'm published!
I was approached by this author to submit a story and well, it was accepted.
The book is printed and has my name in it along with my story of entertaining southern style.

OMG! We have a real-life celebrity here in our midst. I am truly humbled to be in the presence of greatness.  :)

When are you going to completely write your own book? Or better yet, shoot some videos as PSAs (Public Service Announcements) like those from the good ole days? Or how about a movie (comedy) about appropriate southern etiquette and food?

Ya know, the possibilities are endless if I were your manager. You and I together could become bigger than Martha Stewart and Paula Deen combined! We could take this world-wide and start a revolution! Make our own flag...make you the face of southern living across the globe!

Okay, I went off the deep end.

Seriously, though...congratulations on being published.

Awwww, Thanks!

I love to write.
If I had to do my education all over again, I'd definitely follow my heart.
Not business and accounting.
Break the glass ceiling the counselor said.
There are women needed in these fields.
<blech>

Hopefully when my life slows down, I'd like to attempt again.
I'd like to chronicle my father's life.
Even if it only goes to my children and nieces and nephews.

I have 2 children as of right (write *snicker*) now writing.
Makes me proud.
We raised them to love the written word and now they are continuing.

Manager?
Yep.
Sure.
Let's make some money!

Watch it, you young whipper-snapper! I'll have you know, sonny-boy, that I've read a LOT of books and I do a fair amount of shopping at that there local Walmarts. Me and my pappy and my grandpappy before that. But I am smart enough to know not to buy books at Walmarts. Heck, we don't even order a lot of food to be shipped via walmarts website anymore. We tend to get stuff from their distribution center that is much closer to the expiration date than at the local store.

Wait...What?
We have a distribution center within 30 minutes of us and have never heard of that.
Oh and they are building a bigger/better distribution center to take the place of that one.
I'll be checking this out.

A few weeks ago, I had to throw out a couple garbage bags of food because they were expired. I just happened to notice that most of it was stuff my wife usually orders via Walmart online. So, the next shipment that came in a few days later, I looked at all the expiration dates. Almost all had expiration dates of 2 months or less. While at the local Walmart store, I noticed their expiration dates were much farther out than the junk we got at our house.

It is not something you will "hear" about. I only noticed because we experienced this ourselves.
