Amazon Is in the Running to Buy a Movie Theater Chain <---another smart move from a consumer's POV

Amazon.com Inc. is in the running to acquire Landmark Theatres, a move that would vault the e-commerce giant into the brick-and-mortar cinema industry, according to people familiar with the situation.

Landmark is known for it's indie films and is partially owned by Mark Cuban.
Cuban is also partial owner of Magnolia Pictures.

From the below linked article:
"There’s a 70-year-old antitrust settlement in place that could halt the move: Film studios have previously been barred from getting into the theater business, Bloomberg reported.
Amazon spent around $4.5 billion on original programming last year, according to Recode.
The settlement stems from a 1940s Supreme Court case that ended the old Hollywood practice of film studios owning the theaters that showed their flicks.

However, there has been discussion of challenging the decree, part of a wide effort by the Justice Department to review antitrust laws.

“It’s very possible that the Paramount decree gets overturned,” David Miller, an analyst with Imperial Capital LLC, told Bloomberg. “It will be interesting to see if Amazon could be the first to test the new rules.”

You couldn't pay me to buy a theater. Every time I go there's only like 10 people.

I love going to the matinee showings precisely because of the few people there. I love having free reign (almost) as well as the cheaper price of the tickets.

We're late morning and afternoon matinee people in this household, too.
I grab the "senior snack' with popcorn, small drink and very small candy for $4.99.

The wife and I go late mornings also. We don't go to anything in the 9 or 10 a.m. hours but we do like it when we can go between 11 a.m. and noon. We'll stop by our local Speedway gas station to stock up on sandwiches for the movie and so I can get my coffee. Gotta love wives with big purses! At the theatre, we get a large drink so we can get free refills on them if we need to.
