Akron Marathon
« on: June 01, 2008, 09:45:27 PM »
http://www.akronmarathon.org/

So who's near Akron?

Anyone wanna join me?

I'm gonna sleep on it and make it official.  It's been . . . ahem . . . I think almost two years since I did my last 'thon.

Why Akron?     The marathon has good reviews, free beer and free shoes, and I've never done an Ohio 'thon.    :h0161

OMG, Beth, if you come up here you HAVE to meet up with us!!

I know at least one person who will be running and my parents volunteered at the last one.

No way in hell I'm running tho ;) If you want to try to convince me to do part of the Cleveland MS150 bike ride, maybe, but I am not a runner.

About two hours.  I can barely walk, much less run.  Eotrgs are near there.  maybe we can meet at Stacey's (Newark) and put all the calories back on.

Heh . . . one of the best parts about running a marathon - post race refueling!

Dip - there are other distances as well.  :)

I read the race info and it said the pace was for 13 minutes something seconds per mile. Um, I don't think I've ever done a single mile in under 10 minutes, and after not running in who knows how long, I'd be doing well to do a 13 minute mile if I ran ONE.  Seriously, I am not a runner. My hips bother me and my knees turn in and I have super-high arches so my feet bother me even in good shoes...sports that do not involve running other than sprints here and there are much more my style ;)

I would give anything to be able to run with you, Beth! I had an Expanded Disability Status Scale test for my clinical trial a few weeks ago and the timed 500 meter walk took me 13 min. And I was pooped after that. lol

If you do marathons like that, can you pre-plan to only do a portion of it? Is that the same with the bike rides like the MS150? I would love to be able to do part of a ride, but to go the whole 150 I'd have to be hanging onto a car or something. It amazes me that my 61 year old brother can ride all the way. He does 75 miles on a Sunday workout. That's insane.

Jeri, for the Akron Marathon there is a relay option and people can run half and 1/4 marathons. I am not sure what other options there are. For the MS150 you can plan to do just part of it. There are logical stopping points, but if you want to go further and poop out you can take advantage of the sag wagons and get a ride back.

Jeri

I can't say enough good things about these folks:  http://www.suwanneebike.org/   and they are down there in your neck of the woods.    Well organized rides.   Great family atmosphere - bring your son!   All of the rides have various distance options and it's just a great group of folks!

Thanks Beth! That looks really interesting. 2.5 hrs. away. Might be nice for a day trip.

I live right down the street (about 4 blocks) from Ravine State Gardens. It's this huge ravine right smack in the middle of town that you'd never suspect was there. It's got bazillions of azaleas that were planted as part of the Works Project back during the depression. Also has a paved road that circles the perimeter. Can you believe we live that close and I don't even know if my son has ever been there?? Some things you just take for granted. I should start out small and see if I can bike around the road in there before taking off across the state. Heck, I may have forgotten how. They charge to get in now...back when I first moved here there wasn't even a gate.

Come down to Shermanville.  There's a nice path around the top of Mt. Pleasant, well, except for the point where it's two inches wide with the 20 foot drop on one side.  And you ain't supposed to have bikes there, so you better be good at mountain biking while running from the Park Pigs.

There's a bus system in Akron ;)

I suggested Mustard Seed Market Cafe to Beth because you've mentioned eating there and I love it too. I'm sure we can work something out. Not sure if I'd be drinking so I could be DD to get Ms. Chick back to her hotel if needed. Chez Eotrg is a little too far out of my way. Some of the hotels have nice eateries and bars, if that influences where Beth stays. You two could make a night of it and check in if you wanted.

Ferric-

Swing by, and we can discuss that new midwest warehouse you're thinking about.   Will half an acre be enough?

You CANNOT win a marathon riding on a Bus. They stop @ every other corner. Of course, maybe I could arrange for a Flyer from the Starting Line to the Finish Line.  :017  :D! :D! :D!
