Title: 2008 Discount Holiday - need your ideas
Post by: BTPS on July 03, 2008, 05:34:12 PM
There will be a Discount Holiday ebook this year!!!

Anyone interested in helping email me.

This will be open to ALL internet sellers! not just BGT members.

So start thinking of what you would like to offer.

More info will be posted after I get a sample book put together.

It will be FREE and participates will be asked to send it out to everyone!

I hope to have a sample book done within a week.

which is better
a website page with
table of content (list of categories) click it and it takes you to that section
all the ads sorted by categories
an index of all the stores within the ads - click the store name and go to the ad

or a pdf file set up as stated above?

so would you prefer the website or the pdf file ?

I think I will be going with the website idea

Here is what I have so far
http://www.businessesgrowingtogether.com/Discount/1
Feel free to give advice on making it pretty and festive! Pretty is not my cup of tea, lol

I have contacted Sandy to see if she will be kind enough to create a Holiday looking image for us.

There is a "home" page, http://www.businessesgrowingtogether.com/Discount/1
a shop by store name page - which will be in alpha order and the names on the left menu can be clicked and taken right to the area with that stores discount description
and
a shop by category page - I have something on the Clothing page just so you can see it.
FOR the purpose of search engines there will be a description of the category at the top of ecah category page

Let me know your honest opinion.

One of the reasons I support a website is you can alter the website.

Add and delete members, change sales, etc.

I remember there was one holiday coupon ebook that I purchased (still have it somewhere) that was a huuuuuuggggggge pdf download.

The eBook came with resell rights...so I sold it. Didn't make much and most of the buyers complained of the huge d/load time even though it was noted on the auction.

A webpage is the easiest, however, you need to consider that you might have to babysit the book as persons change their sales.

Best of Luck!

Yep it will be a website for sure.

Improvements on the pages are currently being worked on.

Unfortunately, Sandy is not able to do the Holiday decorated mall image.
So anyone interested in doing some type of page banner
PLEASE hollar.

What a neat thing!

And the idea is ... all participants would promote the site to their customers, and on their website?  Nice!

How soon do you need to know the names of those wanting to participate?
I would like to, but, as my store is pretty new, don't know what kind of specials I want to do in August, much less December!  (However, the one I saw there seems like a really good generic idea!)

And when you say you need help . . . what kind of help do you need?
I don't know how helpful someone new can be, but if there is some little something I could do, I would be willing.

Yep, their website, emails, blogs, forums, invite other sellers, etc etc

Quote
How soon do you need to know the names of those wanting to participate?
I plan to have it up and live by September 15th and down on January 1st.

Quote
And when you say you need help . . . what kind of help do you need?
For right now I think I have it under control.
Any ideas are welcome.

Come August I will need help recruiting sellers to advertise on the site.
By then I plan to have folks from ASM that are interested already added to it - giving folks that don't know me, us - something to look at before they decide to partcipate.
NO MEMBERSHIP is required.
It's FREE to advertise on the site.

I am hoping for aleast 100 stores.  That's 100 sellers spreading the word.  It's a low goal but that many will make me happy!  200 of course would be much better  :h0161

I saw the BGT website a while back, and think that is the one I remember saying that it was limited to people who had been selling online for at least a year.  I have some time to go before I get there, but won't forget!

for those wanting to help
SPREAD THE WORD!

It will be 3 web pages

The main page will change around September 15th
http://www.businessesgrowingtogether.com/Discount/1 everything should be clickable and working
If you see any spelling errors or anything else I should change PLEASE let me know.

http://www.businessesgrowingtogether.com/Discount/Cat.html - the category pages are not all ready yet - Clothing is === please click it and let me know what you think

http://www.businessesgrowingtogether.com/Discount/Store.html is also ready

I am willing to buy a domain name that is short and simple that can be used year after year for this purpose.  I just can't think of one that is not already taken.  So your ideas are welcome!
I do not want a domain to include the year because it would look wrong next year, lol.

Does anyone know how to do a form?

I am wanting to put a form on the http://www.businessesgrowingtogether.com/Discount/1 page that interested sellers can put the information required into and then click submit and it would email it to me.  I have NO CLUE how to do this.  There is a free service that I tryied in the past but half the time I didn't get the emails - they went through their service first, I beleive and didn't make it to me.

Anyone that can help out with that PLEASE let me know.
Title: Re: 2008 Discount Holiday - need your ideas

There's a formmail program you can use.  Note: do NOT use Matt's formmail script, it has security holes that let spammers use your server for their outgoing emails. (or at least the older version does, not sure if newest version - released in 2002 - fully plugged the holes or not)

You might look in your admin panel and see if there's a formmail cgi script available for installation.  If so, that'd be the easiest way to install it.

I seen a FORMMAIL thingy on godaddy and I clicked it and it asked for an email address that I wanted the form to go to - so I changed it to what I wanted.  BUT I have no clue at all what that did.  NOR do I know how to UNDO IT without installing it - but apparently I had it installed already.

I am wondering if I can only have it once for all my hosting.  Since I have a ton of sites hosted within the one hosting plan I don't know if that will work or what I might have screwed up.

I expected it to ask me to build a form - never did anything liek that.  So I still don't have a form.

For Linux:
Godaddy uses webformmailer.php or gdform.php
To setup an email account:
Under My Products click Email/Email Forwarding.
Click Use Credit.
Choose the Domain under Setup Free Account, and click Continue.
Setup is now complete, and you can now either Launch or Manage.
If you choose Manage it should now show 1 available.
Click Add, and fill out the form. Click OK.
Email Control Center should now show Pending Setup which should change to Active within a few minutes.
Then go here for form instructions:

kolstromkreations - I have the email accounts - had them for years.  That is not the thing I am trying to figure out.  What I need to a form that I can put on the sellers page for those that want to participate.  The form needs to have boxes to be filled in for the information needed then I want them to click a submit button and have that emailed to me.
email itself on godaddy is easy as pie.

from link kolstrom gave, and then following links from there..

Quote
In order to use our PHP form-mailer, you must specify an email address where you want the contents of your form sent to.

To Specify the Email Address for the Form-Mailer
Log in to your Account Manager.
In the My Products section, select Hosting Account List.
Next to the hosting account you want to modify, click Open.
In the Content section of the Hosting Control Center, click the Form Mail icon.
Under the Forms Email Address section, type the email address you want to use with your form-mailer.
Click Continue.
Verify that this is the address you want to use with your form-mailer, and click Update.

then for page you want the form to appear on

Quote
Create your Web form as normal and assign unique names to your form items.
NOTE: Keep in mind that our form-mailer script will sort the names of your form items alphabetically when it composes the email message. This is the order of precedence: uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers.

For the form action line, enter /gdform.php. For example:
<form action="/gdform.php" method="post">
Set the form method to "post."
In addition to the fields you create in your form, there are three special fields that you can use: subject, redirect, and email.
Subject. Controls the subject line in the form email.

Redirect. Controls the page that your visitors will see after they submit the form.

Email. Controls the return address for the form email.

For example:

<form action="/gdform.php" method="post">
<input type="hidden" name="subject" value="Form Submission" />
<input type="hidden" name="redirect" value="thankyou.html" />
<p>First Name:<input type="text" name="FirstName" /></p>
<p>Last Name:<input type="text" name="LastName" /></p>
<p>E-Mail:<input type="text" name="email" /></p>
<p>Comments:<textarea name="comments" cols="40" rows="10">
Type comments here.</textarea></p>
<input type="submit" name="submit" value="submit"/>
</form>
Save and upload your file to your hosting account.

I don't think I can use that.  because it appears to send all my emails that use a form to the email I input yesterday.  So now my FRF mail goes to BGT because I put the BGT email address on the form mailer thingy.
Obviously I screwed something up.

OK let me start over ---

I am wanting to put a form on the http://www.businessesgrowingtogether.com/Discount/1 page that interested sellers can put the information required into and then click submit and it would email it to me.  I have NO CLUE how to do this. I want to build a form that will automatically get emailed to me when the seller that wishes to participate enters the information and clicks on a submit button.

Title: Re: 2008 Discount Holiday - need your ideas
Post by: WayOutWest on July 10, 2008, 02:29:28 AM
that's what I thought, so let me try again with directions (from link kolstrom gave)

Log in to your Account Manager on godaddy.
In the My Products section, select Hosting Account List.
Next to the hosting account you want to modify (BGT site?), click Open.
In the Content section of the Hosting Control Center, click the Form Mail icon.
Under the Forms Email Address section, type the email address you want to use with your form-mailer.
Click Continue.
Verify that this is the address you want to use with your form-mailer, and click Update.

from my understanding of the instructions, you can do different setups for different sites that you have (so can have email addy for BGT tied to the form on BGT site, have email addy for clothes tied to form on clothing site, etc)

Once you have that configured, edit the html of the page you want the form on.   Go to the section of the page where you want the form and put in the following code:

<form action="/gdform.php" method="post">
<input type="hidden" name="subject" value="Form Submission" />
<input type="hidden" name="redirect" value="thankyou.html" />
<p>First Name:<input type="text" name="FirstName" /></p>
<p>Last Name:<input type="text" name="LastName" /></p>
<p>E-Mail:<input type="text" name="email" /></p>
<p>Comments:<textarea name="comments" cols="40" rows="10">
Type comments here.</textarea></p>
<input type="submit" name="submit" value="submit"/>
</form>

You can, of course, change the formatting of things.  Ie: if you want the text for "First Name:" to be in bold, surround it with bold tags, etc.

Depending on how the formmail program is written, you may be able to easily include extra things for them to enter.  For example, if you wanted phone number, put in line that says   <p>Phone: <input type="text" name="Phone" /></p>
Note: that's assuming that it will let you pass extra info and would have to test to see if can or not.

input means create some sort of user input item.  type=text means it's going to be a single line text box for them to type inside of,  name=Phone  means 'refer to this data that the person entered as "Phone".

Other types of user input you can do (besides type=text)  are drop down boxes, radio buttons, check boxes, and a multi-line text input box (referred to as a textarea - see line in coding for 'Comments').

the last line:  input=submit  means create a submit button, name=submit means call it "submit", value=submit means label the button "submit"  (i might have name and value mixed up, it's late)

You'll also need to make a thankyou.html page or change the redirect landing page to some other existing page.

There's more you can do with your email on godaddy.  Setting it up as 'Catchall' adds functionality without upgrading your plan or buying extra boxes.

I thought it was an email problem.  If you just need a form, here's one.

[url]http://www.kolstromkreations.com/formex.html[/url]

PERFECT!!

WHAT HAPPENS when the submit button is clicked?
View Source shows
<input type="submit" name="submit" value="submit"/>
I have no clue what that means or where the info will end up going.

Quote
You'll also need to make a thankyou.html page or change the redirect landing page to some other existing page.

So I need another page?
Not sure what redirect landing page you are talking about.
YES, I am lost as usually.

Title: Re: 2008 Discount Holiday - need your ideas
Post by: kolstromkreations on July 10, 2008, 08:23:29 PM
When somebody clicks submit, I get this:

Subject: Form Submission
From: somebody @whatever.com
Date: Thu, Jul 10, 2008 7:59 pm
To: me @ kolstromkreations.com

FirstName: Joe
LastName: Schmow
categories: shoes clothes jewelry
comments: I sell stuff.
discount: $2.00 off
email: somebody @whatever.com
storename: What Ever
storeurl: http:// whatever.com
submit: submit
-----------------------------------------------------------------
This e-mail was generated from a form submission on your website:
kolstromkreations.com

Then the user is sent to thankyou.html, so yes make a page for it.
In this example thankyou.html IS the redirect landing page.
If you want the user to end up on some other page, you'll need to change it in the code.  You don't want the form to send the user to a non-existent page and have them get a '404-file not found' error.

Quote
<input type="submit" name="submit" value="submit"/>
I have no clue what that means or where the info will end up going.

All that does is make the submit button.

The info goes to your email for the domain you put the code on.
There's a lot of other stuff you can do with forms, but this should get you going.
Just grab the code, put it on any page, and make thankyou.html
Title: Re: 2008 Discount Holiday - need your ideas
Post by: BTPS on July 11, 2008, 04:35:38 AM
OK I am missing something

I have http://www.businessesgrowingtogether.com/Discount/Submission
When you fill it in and click submit you end up at
http://www.businessesgrowingtogether.com/gdform.php The page cannot be found

you should end up at
http://www.businessesgrowingtogether.com/Discount/thankyou

PLUS -- I have tried it several times and I have not recieved any emails at all.

SO I still don't have this email form thing figured out.
The email should go to BGT@BusinessesGrowingTogether.com but it's not going anywhere that I am getting it.

Quote
Setting it up as 'Catchall' adds functionality without upgrading your plan or buying extra boxes.

I have ALL my doamin names set up that way.

AH HA!!!

I called my friends - LOL - at godaddy.

Everything is working now!!!

FYI - due to the fact that my hosting for BGT is FilthyRichFashions and the form mail can only be put on the main hosted account it wasn't working.  I had to point the form that kolstromkreations did to FilthyRichFashions

ALSO just incase anyone cares -- you can only have ONE email address used on ALL forms hosted within a site.  SO now my FilthyRichFashions form email will end up coming to the BGT email.  But that's ok - I only get one or so a year from there anyways!

OH OH OH

I am still in search of a great domain to use to direct buyers to the Holiday Discount page.

I think http://www.businessesgrowingtogether.com/Discount/Store
is too long!  So I am wanting to buy a domain name that will be much shorter that can be used year after year and possible for other times of the year as well.

And NO I am not spending $3200 to buy SpecialDiscounts.com

He told me if I wrote my own form mailer script I could have it sent where ever I wanted.  I said I am lucky enough to be able to copy and paste!

The one thing I don't like --
the BGT that shows once they click submit and get to the thank you page --
You'll see it when you sign up!  lol

I used the form worked really well.

As far as a domain name to shorten it maybe

bgtebookofsavings.com or ebookofsavings.com, this would be kind of generic so you would be able to use it for anytime of the year.

Can anyone else think of anything else that will help this be a success?

I have
easy registration for sellers
List of discounts by store name
Discounts by category
Buttons with coding for sellers to post

anything else?

donnacrafts - you are now listed in all 3 categories.

I also have a category page made for every category on the list.
I am just hoping I have all the categories I need so I don't have to edit everyone of those pages again.
Kicking myself for not trying to use that pull info from coding that is in this forum somewhere!

Maybe there are more like me.
I want to be part of it, but am having trouble deciding what I want my "deal" to be... I'm leaning towards a discoung (maybe 10%?) for orders paid with GC, but still not sure.

You still have time to think about it.
I did the Google Coupon code because it's the easiest for everyone.  And Since fees are less then PP the 10% off isn't really 10% if you take the lower fees into consideration.
I think buyers like the ability to do it now and not have to wait to be refunded or wait for an invoice.
So GC works best in my opinion.

Still trying to figure out how to make my logo a square, I'd really like to start using BGT again - but that threw me for a loop.  Will work on it and get something done.

Love the coupon site, BT, you've done an outstanding job!   :D!

What if I add a Recipes category?
The southernjewelfabfinds store I would say to put in Books, Home and Garden and Health categories based on what I see in that store.

www.savings-online.com  goes to the page for merchants, not buyers.

If you have used that for the link in your store, the buyer will go to the page soliciting participants, not to the list of stores.

Also, the images seem to be set up to go to the merchant's page, not the customer's page:

a href="http://www.savings-online.com/"> img src="http://www.businessesgrowingtogether.com/Discount/Img/holidaybutton2.jpg"></a

I copied the image, and then linked it to the page where the stores are listed alphabetically.

OK - Maybe this was obvious to everyone else, but I thought it worth mentioning in case there are any more like me out there that just copied the coding as is...  I did, and found it didn't take the buyer where it is I think we want them to go.

I now have a text link on my store's home page and a linked image on my links page.  It's the only image link on my links page... but I had to put it at the very bottom... otherwise the spacing looked really awkward...

www.savings-online.com is where the buyers should be pointed to.
I am not sure if you read the page or if you just assuned it was a sellers participation page (2 different pages actually).  BUT I have re-worded it a little bit.  Let me know what you think now.

So sorry.  My bad!
I will go fix my links today.
Because I saw the images and code for sellers to use on that page, I assumed it was a 'for sellers' page.  But the text at the top is clearly for buyers.

Now that I think about it, we WOULD want the buyers to help spread the word, too... in THEIR blogs, emails, etc, wouldn't we?

Guess that comes from being the new kid on the block - I chould leave the thinking to the grown-ups!

Promotioning Tips and Ideas
and
links to blogs promoting the program

Then I plan to just send one weekly or so email to participants highlighting the updated promoting ideas with links to the pages.

With some modification, you could possibly run multiple instances of this on a single page.

There is the politically correct issue
Christmas
Hannaku (spelling)
Kwansi (spelling)
who knows what other Holiday - which is why this is a Holiday program and  not something else, LOL!

It's been suggested to do a countdown until 12/31/08 -- tend of the program -- might go with that option

Countdown is a very good idea.

Date/Time Calendars on a site page will do a good job, too.

The time part of the calendar reindexes the site and often.

Example here: http://southernjewelfabfinds.blogspot.com/

Here's three countdowns on a page:
http://www.infiverse.com/countdown.html
All this file does is pull the supporting pages using <iframe>.

These are the supporting pages:
http://www.infiverse.com/christmas.html
http://www.infiverse.com/hanukkah.html
http://www.infiverse.com/kwansi.html
The javascript can be easily customized and the files are commented.
Spelling and dates for hanukkah and kwansi will need fixing.

BUT my limited knowledge don't include the
how do I make that show on my web page

I have no clue how to put up an iframe

Title: Re: 2008 Discount Holiday - need your ideas
Post by: kolstromkreations on September 24, 2008, 09:21:50 AM
1.  Save the source of the four files.

2.  Edit countdown.html replacing 'www.infiverse.com' to 'yourdomain.com'
Code: [Select]
<iframe src="http://infiverse.com/christmas.html" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" height="20px" width="510px" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0"></iframe>

<iframe src="http://infiverse.com/hanukkah.html" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" height="20px" width="510px" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0"></iframe>

<iframe src="http://infiverse.com/kwansi.html" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" height="20px" width="510px" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0"></iframe>

3.  Make any changes you want to the 3 files that contain the javascript code.
Code: [Select]
http://www.infiverse.com/christmas.html
http://www.infiverse.com/hanukkah.html
http://www.infiverse.com/kwansi.html
You can change stuff under 'script configuration.'

4.  Upload the four files.

5.  Copy/Paste each instance of the edited <iframe> code (from step 2) on any page you want.  Each seperate instance can be pasted anywhere you want.

If you want, you can just copy/paste my <iframe> code(s) to whatever page want.  Then let me know where it is if it needs any editing.  Right now it's set to black text on a white background, 20x510px.
