* E-commerce In The News / Re: Wal-Mart and eBooks/audio books
« on: August 24, 2018, 11:43:50 AM »
I used to be like you and only wanted the print book.
I hear ya though.
I miss the smell of a new book.
I used to have books in my car, in every room of the house and in my purse.

I bought my first eBook reader and was hooked. (it was a Kobo just like the article mentions WMart is using)

Years ago escalated to a Kindle Fire 7.
But didn't like that the fire wasn't backlit.
I've had my Kindle Paperwhite for three (or is it four?) years.

One of the reasons I immediately liked it was I don't have to have my readers on to read.
Font size?
Check.
Background not white?
Sepia, please.
Font?
Yep, I can choose my font, too.
Notes?
Yep.
Online dictionary?
Yep.
The ability to read others notes on the book while on my Kindle?
Yep.
Can I use my local library to download books?
Yep.
Do I have alot of ebooks I've purchased online outside of Amazon on my Kindle?
At least 500+ books I email to my Kindle and write convert in the subject.

Now, they are all on my Kindle in one place. (1800 and counting)
I have books that were published last week.

I have a crazy amount of classics because they are free on the public domain.
There are so many classics that should in my opinion be read over and over.
My stacks and stacks of books are pared down to one bookcase (to house my favorites) and one case that houses my cookbooks. (those are going to my son the chef...eventually)

I still buy 'touchable' books, but much more sparingly.
I just purchased two coffee table books that I wouldn't have purchased for my Kindle and yes, I am 'reading' those and the photo's in those books are well worth the price.

My motherinlaw (RIP) had macular degeneration and we could work the Kindle book to where in her late stages before going blind, she could read them.
My father (RIP) with a really large font could read his civil war history books.
Both had accepted the fact they would never be able to read again, even large print books didn't work.
But the e-reader gave them pleasure.

Walmart eBooks Service
Saw that WalMart had entered the ebook business yesterday when searching out an eBook via an internet search.

Hmmmm...interesting.

The audible/ebook I was looking for was $10.00 less expensive on Amazon.
$10.00 off first purchase via Wal-Mart made them the same.
WMart is going to have to be more competitive on their pricing though.
Not seeing prices I would want to spend.

In the past did we receive monthly updates to Holidays Toys and Games?
Searched via my notifications from Amazon and don't see monthly notifications.
Received another today that I qualify.
Just seems early to receive this many notifications.

From the below linked article:
"There’s a 70-year-old antitrust settlement in place that could halt the move: Film studios have previously been barred from getting into the theater business, Bloomberg reported.
Amazon spent around $4.5 billion on original programming last year, according to Recode.
The settlement stems from a 1940s Supreme Court case that ended the old Hollywood practice of film studios owning the theaters that showed their flicks.

However, there has been discussion of challenging the decree, part of a wide effort by the Justice Department to review antitrust laws.

“It’s very possible that the Paramount decree gets overturned,” David Miller, an analyst with Imperial Capital LLC, told Bloomberg. “It will be interesting to see if Amazon could be the first to test the new rules.”

Received this email this afternoon from eBay.

Dear d***********

On August 20, we sent you an email with the subject line ‘Keep your account in good standing - payment needed’, indicating that your payment was due. That email was inadvertently sent to you. We’re sorry for the time you may have spent reviewing and responding. We value your time and we apologize.

Your account is in good standing and there is no action required by you.

As always, to review your current payment status:
1. Go to My eBay, and then select Account.
2. Select the All account activity link in the Account Summary section.

Thanks for your understanding.
eBay

Honestly, I do understand.

We have the main hub and every other television has a really small black box (not much bigger than the box that a new men's wallet might come in). I can't complain coz I can start a movie in one room and continue watching it in another room. I can bounce around the house all day like that if I wanted.
We had Dish network ages ago and loved it.
Even though central FL is the lightning capital of the world.
True.
We only lost the satellite once through 4 hurricanes and it was for 30 minutes.

Wow! What small black boxes.
And I do prefer the ability to watch from room to room..
Lord knows these brain cells of mine neeeeeed continuity.

So I receive this email yesterday from eBay: KEEP YOUR ACCOUNT IN GOOD STANDING - PAYMENT NEEDED
Ummm, nope.
My fees are paid automagically via Paypal.
I know my fees are paid because, I saw the charge go through and noted it in my books the day they went through.

What gave me a start?
It has the exact amount of my fees that had been paid this month to eBay.
Now, I know not to click on any links that come in an email (geeeesh) so I signed into my eBay and then Paypal from another browser.
Just to be on the safe side, I changed passwords at the same time.

All's well, fees show as zero, no messages via my dashboard from ebay.
Decided to visit the eBay forums and yep...
In case you received one (as it appears many have) of these emails:
Another Glitch per Ebay Customer Service Rep.
eBay Forum Discussion on Payment Needed

It was time for me to change my passwords anyway.

Wow!
I wonder if Amazon has 'opened' the gate to have this a much more viewed option for buyers.

Still nothing on my end.

Nope on Tivo.
Yep on DVR.
Which I'm thinking of getting rid of and just buying a used Tivo and a fios card to use.
What we pay for internet is dirt cheap (Thanks Frontier) and they threw EVERYTHING they offer in to retain our business.

We upgraded (at no additional charge) to the DVR with Frontier that works with Alexa voice. (nerd alert)

No cable boxes.
We use Amazon Firesticks and Chromecasts in the bedrooms.
Just sold my Apple TV which I made more on it than I paid (eBay)

We have a Netflix account (with five persons ability) and share with our family members.

My children don't and haven't had cable.
They use Firesticks and Chromecast along with subscriptions to HULU and their Amazon Prime and our family Netflix.

My nephew uses HULU Live, Amazon Prime and Netflix with his smart tvs (apps are on the tv).
I asked if he had purchased a Tivo for shows and this made perfect sense to me.
With HULU Live you receive 52 Hours of recorded shows.
You decide what you want to watch, schedule it via HULU Live, it's in the cloud when you want to watch it.

Geeks.
One and All.
Must run in the family.

Really good insight on this subforum:

I don't do FB.
Period.
I do Reddit and only the categories I want to follow.
The Amazon FBA is interesting and often has links that I find useful.

Slow sales for the past week?
Anybody else experiencing slow sales?
Slump in sales?

Amazon Is in the Running to Buy a Movie Theater Chain <---another smart move from a consumer's POV

Amazon.com Inc. is in the running to acquire Landmark Theatres, a move that would vault the e-commerce giant into the brick-and-mortar cinema industry, according to people familiar with the situation.

Landmark is known for it's indie films and is partially owned by Mark Cuban.
Cuban is also partial owner of Magnolia Pictures.

Amazon Is Planning Live TV Recorder, Challenging TiVo]Amazon Working on Tablo-Like Networked DVR (Report) <---would love to see this happen
ALL of my children have cut the chord and have no need for traditional cable tv.
I would cut ours in a heartbeat if we didn't already receive everything...EVERYTHING...for the cost of internet.
Plus, there's the write-off of the internet which is packaged with a cable tv package.

THIS:
Amazon.com Inc. is developing a new device that records live TV, working around cable providers and encroaching on TiVo Corp.’s market, according to a person familiar with the plans.

The device, dubbed "Frank" inside Amazon, is a new type of digital video recorder for the streaming era. It would include physical storage and connect to Amazon’s existing Fire TV boxes, the living room hub for the company’s online video efforts, according to the person. They asked not to be identified discussing unannounced product details. An Amazon spokeswoman declined to comment.

I've thought about this, too.
I would put money down on it that there will be auctions for pallets of inventory.
My thoughts?
Amazon will probably swoop in and buy the pallets.
The products are ready to go and pretty easy to move forward with putting them into their existing inventory.

OR
I don't know if you've ever looked into this:
Liquidations website which I used the keyword Amazon

We used to have a member or two of this forum that would buy from the site (not just from the keyword Amazon but other liquidations) and then individually upload the items back into Amazon or sell on eBay or their own sites.
