Don't fall for this funeral ripoff!
« on: September 14, 2010, 07:53:07 PM »
TMI warning for people who are squeemish about death.

Everyone's health flatlines eventually, and when a relative dies, you may find yourself making funeral arrangements.

It's bad enough they charge thousands of dollars for a casket that costs them $300-500 delivered.  By law, at least in Ahia, they must use one you provide, and you can get one from the same people they do.

Don't fall for the biggest of many funeral ripoffs, tho.  They'll try to "upgrade" (see Paypal "upgrade" from free to paid) you to the ultimate casket.  It cranks shut after the service, and is hermetically sealed.  The sales pitch is your dearly beloved is protected for all time from bugs, critters, even exposure to air filtration, for only a grand or so.

So far, true.

What they don't tell you is that there are anaerobic bacteria which multiply in the absense of air/oxygen.  As they grow, they create gas and turn the tissue into mush.

Eventually, the gas builds up and >>>BOOM!<<< someone walking by the tomb in the middle of the night gets religion at a high rate of speed. :0771

I've actually seen goop someone's loved one leaking out of a mausoleum block.

Fredd, this is law in all states enacted by the FTC many years ago

Quote
According to the Funeral Rule:

you have the right to choose the funeral goods and services you want (with some exceptions).
the funeral provider must state this right in writing on the general price list.
if state or local law requires you to buy any particular item, the funeral provider must disclose it on the price list, with a reference to the specific law.
the funeral provider may not refuse, or charge a fee, to handle a casket you bought elsewhere.
a funeral provider that offers cremations must make alternative containers available.

As a licensed Funeral Director, myself, part of what you have said is true and as a professional I would find any FD that would use those words to a bereaved family, be totally unprofessional.

However I do know there are unprofessional and unscruplous people in all professions.

There are options:

http://www.bestpricecaskets.com/store/merchant.mvc?Screen=SFNT&Store_Code=BPC

http://www.casketstore.net/

All Funeral Homes must by law accept caskets bought from these and in fact if the Funeral Director tries in any way to down play the quality of either then the customer files a complaint with the State's Board of Funeral Directors & Embalmers & directly with the FTC.  If proven and this can be tough, so have more than one person with you when making arrangements, then the Funeral Home is shut down.

Another thing that is required by the Funeral Director (a licensed Funeral Director only is allowed to make arrangements) it that the customer/consumer be given a General Price List prior.  This does not have to be done in person, you can call any and all Funeral Home(s) and request this be mailed or faxed and they must comply.

As a matter of fact you don't have to purchase a casket from anyone nor do you have to have the deceased embalmed.  In KY and I think this is also true for Ohio, if the deceased isn't embalmed then State Law says burial must take place within 36 hours of death.  This is for public health reasons.

Most all Funeral Homes have a rental casket that is very inexpensive for those wishing to have visitation (or a wake in some regions).  The rental is an actual Casket Shell with a removable lined container (usually pressed wood).  Then when interment takes place then the container is removed with the deceased and buried.  And no you do not have to have an outer container ie Vault etc.

If the deceased is embalmed then you can the 36 hour rule doesn't apply.

Of course another good option is Cremation with or without Traditional Services.  No embalming & cremation then no Funeral Home is required.  We still have the right to bury our own within State / Federal Laws.

As you say, there are good and bad in any profession.  The fact that you are confirming and adding details proves you are one of the good ones.

This was something I ran across in the early days of using the Internet, 1995-6.  I didn't realize it was nationwide.

Thanks, Stone for the info and links. Although I hope not to need such services any time soon (!), I appreciated the bestpricecaskets.com info on how to save money on a funeral and they do have some lovely merchandise (if you can call it 'lovely' - does that sound weird?).

Again, this was about 15 years ago, but at the time I ran across wooden caskets made by the Amish.  They were under $500 delivered, and amazing workmanship.

in this area the Amish but they are way more expensive than others.  But of course the workmanship is second to none.

I have an old friend that bought one 15-20 years ago and he stores it in his garage.
