Women's vs Ladies'
« on: August 14, 2010, 08:10:25 PM »
Being new to clothing sales I am stumped. I want to do the right thing and get the best search results for my products, but I don't know which way to go or if it even matters.

What say you?

If I'm selling the item on eBay, I see which has the best numbers in the sub-category.
(sweaters, jeans, coats, etc etc)
Also title number of characters plays into my decision, too.
Even though I know you're asking for your website, I still base alot of my research on eBay.

Today's listings with the below word in title:
womens = 3,183,382
ladies = 1,345,850

I didn't vote cuz I don't have a norm...I go with my research.

I voted for Ladies, but - after I did, I realized, Ladies to me infers regular sizes, and Womens to plus-sizes. Just a thought.

Women's is a specific size range. I'd stick to the department store sizing jargon. No men's clothing uses the same descriptives. Juniors, sized and styled for teen aged or young adult women of slight build. Petite, sized for women of smaller stature, but more mature in style. Misses', the mid range of sizing for women of average stature. Women's, larger sizes usually 18 up or 22 up. Women's petite, formerly known as half sizes, for heavier but shorter women. Plus size is also acceptable for the upper range of women's sizes. I'd consult the major online clothing retailers to find out where the acceptable break point for that category is.  There is also a size category "tall" that modifies either Misses' or Women's sizes, but unless you specialize in that size range, you're not too likely to run across a garment in that size range.

(I was typing this as Suze was posting)

Holy moly, Scoot! You just blew a few fuses in my brain with that one. Of course I did just spend the day installing zen-cart mods, creating and templating a blog, creating feeds from the blog to twitter and facebook, and don't even get me started on the google webmaster tools.

I had no idea what the OP question would open up.

No wonder I can't ever find stuff that fits in stores right off the bat. I don't know if I'm a lady, a miss, a woman, a petite, a junior or what. I just gravitate to the stuff I like and hold it up to see if it'll go around me. <sigh>

Keep it coming! I love all this learning.

Scoot's worked retail clothing.  I was going to point out that I thought they had specific meaning, like misses or juniors.

No wonder I hate shopping for clothes. It's too confusing. I just stick with mens size small or medium T-shirts and call it a day.

Yes, but . . . in the more general world of online retail, Women's is often used to describe all clothing for adult female type folks.

I would use Women's because Amazon does - and then get into more size specific designations.

Friend of mine used to manage at Lane Bryant, which he called clothes for fat chicks.  (He makes a mean artichoke pizza).

Then there's Michael Salem...

I think this is a great way to handle the issue.  I'm going this route as it's a nice compromise and won't  have me too paralyzed to list an ad. Besides, maybe if I were to use women's in the title and then the more detailed description I might pull in more hits.

almost think like me.

Womens = plus size

I look at it like what's at the Neiman Marcus or Macy or ahatever store

Never see or hear of a ladies department it's usually Misses department and then you have a juniors, and a girls, then childrens

Quote
Women's, larger sizes usually 18 up or 22 up.
Womens is a W size or an X size
14W up is Womens Plus Size.
1X and up is also women's plus size
Look at Lane Bryant heck some times they have 12W and 0X sizes now

I've been having a terrible time with sizing, since ebay came up with their new layout.
I buy Junior Plus size: They range XL 2X 3X.  Ebay has no category for these sizes in the junior line up. So I end up listing them in Plus with the caption under the picture "Junior Plus" I've called ebay about this and they said they would check into it. That was 2 weeks ago.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

Nope, Gaylene.
However, I'd try again and note to them that Petites have a larger category...why not Junior's.
If you need me to send an email from my eBay ID...lemme know. The more requests the better.

Thanks Donna, that would be great.  You're right the more people they hear from the better.  I saw one seller listing under plus and making a note under the picture Junior Plus.  But, there is such a difference than a regular plus and a junior plus, I doubt that anyone who wears a junior size is going to check out the plus sizes.
I think I'll write a review, that's updated to how manufacturers are selling their items now.
