What do you know about MSG?
« on: April 27, 2010, 03:01:39 PM »
All these are other names used by food companies to cover the fact that they do contain MSG!

I get severe migraines from MSG and have been wondering why I had been getting them when I know that the list
of ingredients did not have MSG.  Found out!  Any of these will bring it on.

Sodium glutamate

Autolyzed yeast
Calcium caseinate
Gelatin
Glutamate
Glutamic acid
Hydrolyzed corn gluten
Hydrolyzed protein (any protein that is hydrolyzed)
Monopotassium glutamate
Monosodium glutamate
Natrium glutamate (natrium is Latin/German for sodium)
Sodium caseinate
Textured protein
Yeast food
Yeast extract
Yeast nutrient

MSG can also be hidden under "natural flavor" but not all natural flavors contain MSG.  They can be so tricky with ingredients, major pet peeve of mine  :(

My daughter and MSG = migraines.

She's very careful as to what she eats. She (and we) try to stay away from corn gluten, too.

Thanks for the list.

It's a food that many people adversely react to.
As a sodium based food, I suppose that even people who have no symptoms should be cautious about it, but frankly, there are many Chinese dishes that simply don't taste right unless they are prepared with at least a little msg.

I have found that if you add just the right amount of salt, pepper and fresh garlic it will taste like MSG is in the food.
