Anyone lactose intolerant?
« on: July 23, 2009, 09:20:55 AM »
I have been severely lactose intolerant for about 10 years now. A glass of milk will cause immediate vomiting. I won't go into the rest of the gory details but suffice it to say that dairy and I have become mortal enemies.

The other day I got a newsletter from one of the health related sites I've signed up with and it spoke of lactose intolerance and alternative sources for calcium intake (which can be a challenge if you can't partake of dairy products).

It mentioned that yogurt is something most lactose intolerant folks can eat. Something about the live culture (the probiotics) that aid in the breakdown of lactose and so it won't cause the physical reactions we who can't eat dairy are familiar with.

I didn't believe it so I'm currently conducting an experiment on myself. (I have a thing for clinical trials. LOL)

For three days now I have eaten a Dannon Activia Fiber cup (Vanilla and Cereal flavor) at breakfast.

The fact that I could eat it without throwing up was a good sign. And after 3 days there have been no other symptoms of physical distress from eating it either.

I'm ecstatic because I LOVE yogurt and always have. However, I didn't even want to TRY yogurt if cheese and milk make me explode. I never considered the live bacteria angle.

NOTE: This does NOT apply to FROZEN yogurt as the living culture in the yogurt is killed by freezing and there's nothing to break down the lactose.

Oh, and I know all about those pills (Lactaid) but I've got such a bad case they only take the edge off the misery.

So you can see why I'm a firm believer now in the powers of yogurt.  :h0035 Such a firm believer that I felt compelled to share that news with everyone else. LOL ~ Highwire and Themes & Services • Custom Web Design

My motherinlaw is lactose intolerant and the Activia works for her.

In the last year, I've begun eating Cabot's Greek Yogurt. I don't know if it has the live cultures that you need...but we love it.

The Vanilla Bean and the Honey flavors are yummmmy.

I'm glad you found that yogurt is working for you.
